ACTIVITIES:
VNIIAES creates full-scope simulators for nuclear power plants.[1] The institute also researches methods to improve NPP operations and NPP safety, analyzes reactor incidents, develops computerized control systems, trains NPP personnel, and tests equipment to be used in nuclear power plants.[2]

5/6/99:  FIRE AT VNIIAES -- NO RADIATION RELEASED
Minatom announced that a fire took place at VNIIAES on 6 May 1999.  The fire was caused by an explosion in a room that was being remodeled.  No radioactive materials were located in the room at the time of the fire.  Twelve people were injured in the fire, 11 of whom were hospitalized.
