ACTIVITIES:
This institute prepares designs and project documentation for the construction, reconstruction, or technical refurbishment of nuclear reactors and power plants. It also does design work for radiochemical, metallurgical, mechanical, and instrument-engineering plants as well as performing research on decontamination and removal of radioactive contamination and the transportation of radioactive waste. Established in 1942 under the Soviet Ministry of Medium Machine Building, this state-controlled facility employs some 2,000 people.[1,2]  VNIPIET is in the process of designing a storage facility in cooperation with the US Department of Defense at Chelyabinsk-65 for the storage of fissile materials from dismantled nuclear weapons.[3,4] As a subcontractor on a large solid radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel storage facility on Novaya Zemlya, VNIPIET is responsible for the preparation and transport of radioactive materials from Murmansk Oblast to the site.[5]

ACTIVITIES:
As of 4 July 2001 VNIPIET Sosnovyy Bor Design and Research Institute implements government contracts to upgrade the safety systems of Russian nuclear reactors.  Research at the institute is conducted on the decommissioning and replacement of nuclear power reactors and the disposal of radioactive waste.  The institute has acquired a number of state-of-the-art computers for computer-assisted design purposes.  The institute hopes to attract foreign customers.
