NPT--Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty: This treaty, adopted and signed in 1968, was created to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and to provide assurances that civilian nuclear programs in non-nuclear-weapons states do not contribute to military nuclear programs. (Please see the full text of the NPT, the signatory list, and a US Department of State narrative on the treaty.
CTBT--Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (http://www.ctbto.org): This treaty bans all nuclear weapons explosions, attempting thereby to limit improvements to nuclear weapons and bring an end to the development of new types of nuclear weapons. (Please see the CTBT full text, signatory list, and a US Department of State fact sheet.)
PTBT--Treaty Banning Nuclear Tests in the Atmosphere, in Outer Space, and under Water (Partial Test Ban Treaty): In force since 1963, this treaty bans nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space, and under water. Underground nuclear explosions are permitted so long as they do not cause radioactive debris to exit the territory of the country conducting the explosion. (Click here for the full text.)
Treaty on Principles Governing Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies (Outer Space Treaty)--Signatories of this treaty agree that the exploration and use of outer space and celestial bodies shall be for peaceful, scientific purposes only, and shall be done for the benefit all countries. (Please see the full text of the treaty, the signatory list, and a US Department of State narrative on the treaty.)
Treaty on the Prohibition of the Emplacement of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction on the Seabed and the Ocean Floor and in the Subsoil Thereof (Seabed Treaty)--In force since 1972, this treaty prohibits the emplacement of all weapons of mass destruction in any part of the ocean floor beyond any signatory's 12-mile coastal zone. (Please see the full text of the treaty, the signatory list, and a US Department of State narrative on the treaty.)
