Abstract:
On 6 May 2006, the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced
conclusion of an agreement with the
government of Kazakhstan to create a partnership under the
Second Line
of Defense program, a U.S. initiative that uses detection and deterrence to
minimize the risk of nuclear proliferation, illegal trafficking, and terrorism.
The agreement will allow NNSA to work collaboratively with the Kazakhstan
Customs Control Committee to install radiation detection equipment and
integrated communications equipment at strategic border crossings throughout
Kazakhstan, as well as train law enforcement officials in order to identify and
deter illicit nuclear or radiological materials smuggled inside cargo.
