Abstract:
An operational investigation group from the Kazakh Interior Ministry's
department for the South Kazakhstan region apprehended two Kazakh citizens involved in
an illegal attempt to sell a container of cesium-137 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan,
the Interfax-Kazakhstan news agency reported on 18 June 2007. The report
did not specify the amount of cesium-137 involved in the attempted sale.[1]
One of the suspects, a 30-year-old resident of Shymkent, was apprehended
outside of the Fosfornik Cultural Center attempting to sell the
radioactive material for 1.5 million tenge (approximately $12,500
as of 18 June 2007).[1,2]
A subsequent investigation revealed that the container of radioactive
material had come from a resident of Almaty. On 16 June 2007, the Almaty
resident arrived in Shymkent to receive payment for the cesium-137, which the
individual believed had been sold, and
was arrested during the transfer of money. It appears that the
arrest of the 30-year-old Shymkent resident occurred prior to the 16 June 2007 arrest of the Almaty
resident; however, the exact date of the first arrest was not
provided.[1]
Criminal cases have been initiated against both individuals under the Kazakh
Criminal Code's Article 247, which pertains to the illegal sale, storage and
transportation of radioactive materials.[1] The South Kazakhstan investigation group expects to locate the source
of the stolen radioactive material.[2]
