Abstract:
On 5 June 2007, a cylinder-shaped container 4.5 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height, marked with a radioactivity sign and a serial number, was discovered in a forest near the Kizilov farm, Grachev rayon, Stavropol Kray in southwest Russia. A resident of the nearby Staromaryevskoye village found the item and alerted the local police. A response team from the Stavropol Kray’s Main Directorate under the Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Disaster Relief (MChS) was called to the site and determined that radiation on the container’s surface was equal to 8.4 microsieverts per hour, but did not exceed the background level at one meter from the source. MChS officials transported the container to the town of Izobilnyy, where it was placed in a special storage at the directorate’s chemical-radiometric laboratory. An investigation is underway to establish the container’s origin.[1,2]
