Abstract:
A resident of Taganrog was detained
in Podolsk (a Moscow suburb) while trying to sell 6.5 g of
osmium tetroxide to
undercover operatives of the Podolsk Department of the Interior Directorate for
Fighting Organized Crime (UBOP GUVD), RIA Novosti reported on 13 April 2007.
The seller, 50-year old Aleksandr Bakhlomov, was offering to sell the osmium tetroxide
for 1.3 million rubles (about $52,000 as of spring of 2007). An investigation of the incident
and a criminal case against Bakhlomov were initiated. Komsomolskaya pravda
reported that a "source, close to the investigation" maintained that the
authorities were investigating whether Bakhlomov had been contacted by
individuals who wanted to use the osmium tetroxide for an attack in the Moscow
subway.[1]
