Abstract:
An employee of a scrap metal receiving station in Ufa (Bashkortostan republic,
Russia) discovered a metal cylinder, which emitted ionizing radiation, Gzt.ru
reported on 28 September 2007. The cylinder, which measured 15 centimeters in
height by 15 centimeters in diameter, emitted elevated levels of gamma radiation: 3 milliroentgen/hour
at close range, and 30 and 10 microroentgen/hour at 1 and 2 meters,
respectively.[1] The object was placed into a metal container, and subsequently
sent to the Blagoveshchensk branch of the
Radon Special Combine for disposal. [2] On 3 October 2007 Argumenty i
Fakty reported that an investigation into the incident was ongoing, and
authorities were trying to establish the identity of the man who had brought the
object to the scrap metal receiving station. [2]
