Abstract:
The
Federal Customs Committee of Armenia installed radiation detection equipment at the Megrinskiy
checkpoint on the Armenian-Iranian border, capable of screening vehicles with a cargo carrying capacity
of up to 40 metric tons, IA
Regnum reported on 24 September 2007. The newly installed equipment is
reportedly capable of penetrating walls thicker than 0.5 meters, which allows
for detection of contraband that might be concealed in hidden cargo compartments,
including radioactive materials. The Chief of the Megrinskiy checkpoint
was quoted as saying that in 2006 a total of
approximately 35,000 trucks and 69,000 people crossed the Armenian-Iranian
border in both directions at the checkpoint. {Entered 10/30/07 PT}
