To date, Greece has not taken any steps towards becoming a submarine exporter. However, this could well change in future. The German submarine producer HDW has cooperated with the Turkish Naval Forces and Gölcük Shipyard to market used and new submarines produced in Turkey of German supplied material kits. Since HDW purchased Hellenic Shipyards in 2001, Greece may well become HDW's export partner of choice, instead of Gölcük. Hellenic Shipyards would then likely request the collaboration of the Hellenic Navy to market its used Type 209/1100 or 209/1200 Glavkos-class vessels, with the subsequent co-production of new submarines in Greece.
