History: Originally established in 1905 in Pusa (Bihar), with financial assistance from American philanthropist Henry Phipps. The institute was moved in 1936 to New Delhi after an earthquake damaged the building in Pusa. It was given the status of "Deemed-to-be-University" in 1956, which allowed it to award M.S. and PhD degrees in a variety of agricultural disciplines.
Activities: The institute is currently measuring NO2 emissions from soils that produce rice-wheat. They are using the measurements to ascertain the emission coefficient of NO2 due to the use of nitrogenous fertilizers.
