Size: Consists of 47 Central Research Institutes, 5 National Bureaus, 12 Project Directorates, 32 National Research Canters, 77 All India Coordinated Research Projects, 34 State Agriculture Universities, and 1 Central Agricultural University, 344 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and 8 Trainers Training Canters.
Primary Function: Encourages research and development in the agricultural sector; provides information for and consultancy on agriculture, horticulture, resource management, animal sciences, agricultural engineering, fisheries, agricultural extension, agricultural education, home science, and agricultural communication.

History:
ICAR was set up on 16 July 1929 on the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Agriculture. It was re-organized in 1965, and again in 1973.

Activities:
ICAR also runs the Project Directorate of Biological Control. The project brings together the different sectors of the biotech industry to discuss advances made in the industry. It has also been doing research in developing strategies to control Parthenium weed in India.
