Primary Function: Trains manpower for the public health system.
History: The institute was established in 1932 at the University of Calcutta (Kolkata) with the assistance of the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1947, an Industrial Health Research Unit was added to the institute. In 1998, the establishment of a new Center for Nutrition at the institute was commissioned.
Activities: The institute provides technical and consolatory services to various national and international organizations, such as the Indian Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal, Coal India Ltd., Eastern Railways, National River Conservation Directorate, Indian Ministry of Environment & Forests, Indian Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment, UNICEF, and West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
The institute has also been conducting research in the following areas:
- Water toxicity bioassays
- Water quality surveillance in five districts of different states in India
- The extent of parasitic infections and their linkage with iron deficiency
- Development of a comprehensive, capacity-building training and awareness generation program to tackle the arsenic problem in West Bengal
- Eye symptomatology and care in school age children in a slum of Calcutta (Kolkata)
- The impact of health education on feeding and weaning practices of newborns
- The development of a training program for school teachers on school health services
- The contamination of ground water resources by arsenic in West Bengal
- Linkages between parasitic infections, latrine use, and anemia in West Bengal
- Iodized salt intake and body iodine status in nine districts of West Bengal
- Iodized salt intake and body iodine status in school children in Calcutta (Kolkata)
- Incidences of Neisseria gonorrhea among commercial sex workers in Calcutta (Kolkata), and the promotion of safe sex by these workers
- Drinking water quality testing on samples from different areas of Calcutta (Kolkata) and Howarh
- Incidence of hookworm infection and its relationship to iron deficiency anemia
The institute has also trained shop vendors of Calcutta (Kolkata) to handle food properly in the hope of reducing the incidence of food poisoning.
