Description:
Established in 1965 for manufacturing transparent acrylic sheets, Transpek Industry Ltd. has become one of the leading Indian manufacturers of basic chemicals for the textile, pharmaceutical, agrochemical, paper and pulp, ceramics, rubber, and polymer industries. Transpek Industry Ltd. indigenously developed chlorinated chemicals, including thionyl chloride and chloroacetyl chloride. In 1990, Transpek Industry Ltd. won a bid to install and commission a turn-key chemical plant in Iran worth an estimated $12.5 million, and in 1996, the company commissioned the world's largest manufacturing facility for thionyl chloride outside of Europe. Thionyl chloride is a precursor for nerve agent and possibly mustard and is on the Australia Group's export control list.

Activities:
Transpek is especially renowned for its work with chlorine and sulfur. The company indigenously produced thionyl chloride, chloroacetyl chloride, numerous acid chlorides and byproducts. Transpek's Research and Development group is working on molecules involving acid chlorination, Friedel Craft, and high-pressure reactions.

Highlights:

• In 2000, the Transpek Ltd, transferred its sulfoxylates business to a Joint Venture Company - Transpek Silox Industry Limited.
• In 1996, the company commissioned the world's largest manufacturing facility for thionyl chloride outside of Europe. Thionyl chloride is a precursor for nerve agent and possibly mustard and is on the Australia Group's export control list.
• In 1995, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), Germany's intelligence agency, reported that Transpek is one of three Indian companies that helped Iran equip a facility to produce sarin and tabun.
• In 1990, Transpek Ltd. won a bid to install and commission a turn-key chemical plant in Iran chemical plant in Iran worth an estimated $12.5 million. In June 1989 the New York Times reported that Traspek Ltd. planned to sell 257 tons of thionyl chloride, used to produce mustard or nerve gas, to Iran and had exported exporting the chemical to Iran through Dubai in March of that same year.
