Description and Activities:
Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited (RCF) began operations in 1978 and today is one of the largest fertilizer and chemical companies in Asia. The publicly owned enterprise operates 20 plants in Trombay and 5 large plants at its fertilizer unit in Thal (Raigad District, Maharashtra). RCF produces numerous chemicals and gases for agricultural and industrial applications including ammonia, methanol, sodium nitrate, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, methylamines, and dimethyl acetamide. The facilities of RCF support the Department of Atomic Energy's (DAE) Heavy Water Plant (HWP) in Thal, which was the first of its kind in India to utilize the ammonia-hydrogen exchange process. RCF reportedly supplies feed gas to the HWP's Ammonia Plant. According to DAE annual reports, the performance of HWP, Thal was negatively affected in 1998-1999 and 2001-2002 due to the non-availability of feed gas from RCF.

The Chairman and Chief Executive of the Heavy Water Board (DAE-Government of India) also serves as the Director of the RCF's Board of Directors.
