THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Vice President
For Immediate Release November 18, 1997
U.S.-KAZAKHSTAN JOINT COMMISSION
Environment, Science & Technology Committee
Vice President Al Gore commends the continuing expansion of cooperation between the U.S. and Kazakhstan on scientific and environmental issues. While the issues addressed are diverse, the overall goal of environmentally sustainable development remains the foremost goal of the Committee's activities.
The Vice President and President Nazarbayev note in particular the Committee's work in helping Kazakhstan redirect existing scientific and technological expertise from defense to commercial activity in the area of biotechnology, where efforts are underway to cooperatively develop bioengineered goods from agricultural products and waste.
The Vice President is also pleased with the successful completion of a joint survey of parts of Kazakhstan using the latest remote sensing technology and the creation of an important data base for Kazakhstan from the data jointly collected. Such data, in the form of images, will be of great assistance to Kazakhstan in developing its infrastructure, including environmental assessments, land use planning and minerals exploration.
The Vice President was encouraged by initial U.S.-Kazakh cooperation on the issue of CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species) and the state of the Caspian Sea sturgeon fishery. This issue is of great importance to the U.S. and Kazakhstan, not only commercially, but as matter of global biological diversity.
