Description: In April 1955, during the second plenary session of North Korea’s Academy of Sciences, the decision is made to establish the “Atomic and Nuclear Physics Research Institute (原子 및 核物理學硏究所).” The Nuclear Physics Research Institute was established in 1964, and was reportedly expanded and reorganized in 1982. The institute conducts research on nuclear reactor physics & technology, and on nuclear fuel and materials. The institute also trains nuclear engineers and physicists. According to Bermudez, the institute was responsible for the daily operation of the nuclear reactors in Yŏngbyŏn. In 1993, the institute’s director was Dr. Yun Chang Ho.
