Location: Hwajin-ri (華進里) , P’yŏngwŏn-kun (平原郡), South P’yŏng’an Province (平安南道), North Korea [Note: some South Korean references use an alternative Chinese character (花進里) for this location; however, the pronunciation is the same].
Subordinate to: Air Defense Command Center (空軍司令部) and/or First Air Division (第1空軍師團), Korean People’s Air Force (朝鮮人民軍空軍), Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces (人民武力省), National Defense Commission (國防委員會); or Unidentified coastal defense missile regiment, Korean People’s Navy (朝鮮人民軍海軍), Ministry of the People’s Armed Forces (人民武力省), National Defense Commission (國防委員會)
Primary Function: Deployment and launch of surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and/or surface-to-ship missiles
Description: Hwajin-ri was used as a missile test facility prior to the completion of the Musudan-ri in the mid-1980s. There is little information about this facility, but there are reports that it is currently a SAM base or a surface-to-ship missile base.
