Chunggang-ŭp Missile Base (中江邑 미사일 基地)

Other names: Chunggang-ŭp Underground Missile Base, Chunggang-ŭp Underground Nodong Base, Chunggang-up Missile Base, Chunggang-chin Missile Base, Chungganjin Missile Base, Chung-kang-chin Missile Base, Chunggang-kun Missile Base

Location: Chunggang-ŭp (中江邑), Chunggang-kun (中江郡), Chagang Province (慈江道), North Korea, 5km from the Chinese city of Linjiang (臨江)

Subordinate to: Missile Division (미사일 師團), Ministry of the People's Armed Forces (人民武力省), National Defense Commission (國防委員會)

Primary Function: Deployment and launch of missiles, probably Nodongs and/or Paektusan-1 missiles

Description: According to North Korean defector Im Yŏng Sŏn, who defected in August 1993, North Korea began construction of a missile base at Chunggang-ŭp in 1990, while Jane’s Missiles & Rockets reports that construction started around 1991-1993. Im says that about 5,000 workers were assigned to work on the construction project in order to achieve the 1994 target date for completion. Im says the base is designed to launch missiles capable of striking US military facilities in Japan and Guam. Considering the base’s location, the missiles deployed at this base are likely Nodong or Paektusan-1 missiles.
