Primary Function:
The HEJRIC is one of Pakistan's leading research institutes of chemistry. It functions under the aegis of the University of Karachi. The institute's main areas of research, training, and development include natural product chemistry, protein chemistry, pharmacology and plant biotechnology. The HEJRIC is primarily a civilian institution.

Description & Activities:
The Husein Ebrahim Jamal Institute of Chemistry (HEJRIC) was established in the University of Karachi's Chemistry Department in 1967. Since then, HEJRIC has grown and emerged as the largest doctoral program in Pakistan with over 140 Ph.D students. HEJRIC's main branches of research include natural product chemistry, protein chemistry, pharmacology, and plant biotechnology. The areas of research covered in the programs related to the "isolation, synthetic and pharmacological studies on novel natural products and various aspects of protein chemistry." The institute has sophisticated facilities and equipment for chemical analysis and spectroscopy. It also has an Industrial Analytical Center, which provides consultancy services to over 200 industries in Pakistan.
