Description: Yonggwang-6 is South Korea’s 18th nuclear power reactor. Yŏnggwang-5 was constructed under the third phase of South Korea’s nuclear power program, which called for self-reliance in nuclear technology. Under this phase, South Korea planned to standardize the design of nuclear power plants and achieve technological self-sufficiency. These plans were met with the construction of Yŏnggwang-3 and -4, which served as the basic model for the Korean Standard Nuclear Plant (KSNP). Yŏnggwang-6 was constructed under the same contractual scheme as its twin unit, Yŏnggwang-5. The initial construction of Yŏnggwang-6 was planned for December 1995, but due to protests by residents of Yŏnggwang-kun, South Chŏlla Province, construction was delayed until June 1997. Yŏnggwang-6 was completed in 2002 and began commercial operation on 23 December 2002.
