Primary Function: The Homs oil refinery is believed to produce a number of dual-use chemicals for the Syrian chemical weapons program, including isopropyl alcohol, ethanol, methanol, and ethylene. These are supplied to the chemical weapons production facility adjacent to the refinery. It also produces raw sulfur as a byproduct of oil refining for subsequent processing.

Description:
The Homs oil refinery was opened in 1959 and has been in continuous operation since that date. It has been modernized and expanded a number of times, most recently in 1988. The Homs refinery treats light and heavy crude oils and improves the characteristics of the obtained primary petroleum products using reforming and sweetening processes. It also blends base oils to produce a variety of lubricating oils for the domestic market.
