Description: The stated goals of the SSRC are to advance and coordinate scientific activities in Syria, "particularly those related to Education, Research & Development, Consulting, manufacturing and maintenance, and to work on research and development projects needed for the economic and social development of the country."[1]

According to analysts, the SSRC is the main government agency in charge of research, development and production of weapons of mass destruction and missiles. The SSRC is reportedly used as a cover for Syrian intelligence services' efforts to obtain biological and chemical weapons.[2]
