Having suffered Iraqi Scud
missile attacks during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Israel decided to develop,
with some U.S. assistance, its own short-range missile defense system called
Arrow. The Arrow system became operational in 2000. Israel is a strong advocate
of missile defenses and has also contracted with a U.S. firm, TRW, to develop
a ground-based laser system to intercept light battlefield rockets.
