Having suffered Iraqi Scud missile attacks during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Israel decided to develop, with some U.S. assistance, its own short-range missile defense system called Arrow. The Arrow system became operational in 2000. Israel is a strong advocate of missile defenses and has also contracted with a U.S. firm, TRW, to develop a ground-based laser system to intercept light battlefield rockets.
