Iran constructed a missile test monitoring and telemetry station at Tabas with North Korean assistance, presumably in the late 1980s. [1] The station is located in the Salt Desert, which enables Iran to launch missiles from the Shahroud test site and observe their impact in the desert away from highly populated regions. The facility might also be involved in Iran's space program as a satellite tracking station. [2]
