Istanbul Technical University founded the Institute of Energy in 1961 as a center for nuclear energy research and education. Over time, the Institute has evolved into a hub for broader research into energy solutions for Turkey's ever growing energy demands, including research of nuclear energy. The Institute operates the ITU-TRR TRIGA 250KW research reactor. It also houses laboratories for radiation activation analysis, nuclear chemistry, and others related to radioisotopes.
