The Central Workshops are located in Trombay and are a vital part of the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). In addition to R&D work, the Central Workshops manufacture key components for research and power reactors. Some of these components are seal discs that are used to prevent heavy water leakage from coolant channels in 235MWe pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWR). The Central Workshops have also been involved in the development and production of high-tech quarter wave resonators for BARC's Pelletron Accelerator Facility, a Prototype Teletherapy Unit, fuel pin holders for the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), and a Hydraulic Ingot Manipulator. Besides these projects, the Central Workshops have also been active in programs beyond the nuclear sector. These outside projects include the manufacture of components for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
According to the DAE's (Government of India) 2001-2002 Annual Report, the Central Workshops were involved in over 200 projects (50 of which were R&D related). The facilities were reportedly in the process of developing an Advanced Precision Fabrication Facility.
