A cache of World War II-era Japanese chemical weapons buried outside of the Chinese city of Qiqihar contains about 500 munitions filled with agents such as mustard and phosgene, Agence France-Presse reported Saturday (see GSN, June 18).
A team of 30 Japanese experts arrived at the site last week to aid Chinese experts in disposing of the munitions. The work is expected to last 10 days, AFP reported (Agence France-Presse, Channel News Asia, June 19).
