Cuba Joins U.N. Nuclear Terrorism Pact

Cuba yesterday joined the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Dec. 19, 2007).

"This sovereign decision of the Cuban government illustrates its irrevocable commitment to the fight against terrorism under all its forms," said Cuba's U.N. delegation in a statement.

The communist state is the 54th nation to sign the convention, which is one of the United Nations' 13 tools aimed at curbing terrorism around the world. Under the pact, Cuba is obligated to take "all practicable measures, including, if necessary, adapting their national law, to prevent and counter preparations in their respective territories for the commission within or outside their territories" of a terrorist attack involving a nuclear weapon (Agence France-Presse/Spacewar.com, June 17).
