Indian Interceptor Destroys Missile in Test
An Indian interceptor today destroyed a modified version of a nuclear-capable ballistic missile in a successful test off eastern India, Agence France-Presse reported (see GSN, Dec. 3).
An Indian defense official said an Advanced Air Defense missile interceptor was used to bring down a modified Prithvi 1, a surface-to-surface missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead.
"The test was successful," said a second Indian defense official close to the exercise.
Indian military personnel fired the missiles from the Chandipur-on-Sea and Wheeler Island test sites after more than 5,000 people were evacuated from the area, officials said (Agence France-Presse/Google News, Dec. 6).
