Indianapolis on the Lookout for Nuclear Threats at Super Bowl
Specialists from the U.S. Energy Department will be scanning for potential nuclear or radiological weapons materials at the Indianapolis stadium where this year's Super Bowl will be played, the Associated Press reported on Monday (see GSN, Jan. 31, 2007).
Indianapolis has spent millions of dollars in preparations for the Super Bowl. Federal, state and local officials are all involved in the security efforts surrounding Sunday's football game that will pit the New York Giants against the New England Patriots. As many as 1,000 local law enforcement officers will be on hand at Lucas Oil Stadium and in the nearby area to respond to potential threats.
"We're using more technology, and state-of-the-art technology, than has been used in any Super Bowl before this one," Indianapolis Public Safety Director Frank Straub said (Wilson/Schedler, Associated Press/Boston Herald, Jan. 30).
