Israel Receives Nuclear-Capable Subs
Israel has received two Dolphin-class submarines, a military source told Agence France-Presse yesterday (see GSN, July 14).
Germany has now provided five submarines to Israel.
While the Dolphins are designed to fire nuclear-capable cruise missiles, Berlin stressed three years ago that the new Israeli vessels would not be outfitted for holding nuclear armaments. Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons.
Dolphin-class submarines can travel 2,800 miles with a 35-person crew, according to Jane's Defense Weekly. Israeli media reports have called the vessels an important tool in a potential Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear sites.
Israel ordered the two new submarines in 2005 and had originally expected to receive them next year (Agence France-Presse/Google News, Sept. 29).
