PAC-3 Interceptor Misses Target in Test

An upgraded Patriot Advanced Capability 3 missile failed to hit its target during a test yesterday at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 20, 2007).

It remained to be determined why the interceptor missed the Hera target missile, said test spokesman Dan O'Boyle.

"That's why we test, to make sure things are right before they go into the field," he said. "It's a normal progression that a weapons system goes through."

The Army is now pursuing the Missile Segment Enhancement program to give the interceptor greater range (see GSN, Dec. 11, 2003; Associated Press/Las Cruces Sun-News, March 25).
