Russia to Accept Used Atomic Material From Uzbekistan
A cache of Russian-origin material used to power an atomic scientific reactor in Uzbekistan will be repatriated under a deal backed by Uzbek President Islam Karimov, Interfax quoted officials in the one-time Soviet satellite state as saying (see GSN, July 30).
The plan calls for a swap in which fresh Russian low-enriched uranium would be provided for atomic operations at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.
The pact's participants formalized the nonproliferation-promoting arrangement on May 15, Interfax reported (Interfax, July 30).
