Russian Sub Commissioning Delayed to 2013
Russia on Tuesday said its new submarine Severodvinsk would not begin military operations until next year, ITAR-Tass reported (see GSN, Aug. 1, 2011).
The vessel was at one point expected to be commissioned by the end of 2011, according to earlier reports. It is believed to be capable of firing nuclear-tipped cruise missiles.
“The deadlines for the contract of the Russian navy to bring the Yasen-class submarine into service were not fulfilled, the deadline was delayed to 2013,” according to First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov (ITAR-Tass, Jan. 24).
