South Korea Plans Sea-Based Interceptor Purchase: Report

South Korea plans to purchase a quantity of U.S.-built Standard Missile 3 interceptors to field on its Aegis warships, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Seoul has been mulling whether to procure Patriot Advanced Capability 3 interceptors for deployment on land, but worries about the weapon's accuracy against North Korean Scud and Rodong missiles prompted the South Korean navy to suggest acquiring the sea-based defenses. The nation's top military officials have reportedly endorsed the plan.

South Korea wields upgraded PAC-2 interceptors at present, according to the newspaper.
