Ukraine to Get Uranium-Related Gear in Return for HEU
Ukrainian scientific facilities are set to receive from the United States new equipment for investigations of low-enriched uranium in return for Ukraine's elimination of weapon-usable highly enriched uranium, the former Soviet state's president said on Thursday (see GSN, June 10).
"Currently, the U.S. is ready to launch production of the respective equipment for Ukraine and gradually deliver it to our research centers. All the necessary documentation will be signed, which will provide guarantees to the both parties of the agreement," Worldwide News Ukraine quoted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych as saying at an annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov in June said his country had almost finished meeting its April 2010 commitment to clear out all weapon-usable highly enriched uranium from within its borders (Worldwide News Ukraine/Sacramento Bee, Sept. 23).
