U.S. Seeks Anthrax Toxin Treatments
The Obama administration has called for bids on the preparation of medicines to counter anthrax in people showing signs of infection following the deadly agent's delivery in a biological strike, Global Biodefense reported on Monday (see GSN, June 29).
The request -- issued by the Health and Human Services Department's Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority -- could result in the production and shipment of drugs to the Strategic National Stockpile of medical countermeasures. Toxin fighters delivered in response to the order would be suited for administration to people in a crisis or as a countermeasure licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (Global Biodefense, July 9).
