Multimedia: Fuel Cycle

Disposal
If spent fuel is not reprocessed, it may be prepared for disposal by sealing it in specially designed steel and concrete canisters. These canisters may then be placed in a permanent disposal facility constructed inside a stable rock or salt formation deep underground. No permanent disposal sites are operational yet, but several countries plan to have disposal facilities ready by 2010.
