Cobalt-60

Cobalt-60 is man-made and has a half-life of 5.27 years. It emits both beta particles and strong gamma radiation.

Cobalt-60 has many industrial applications, and can also be used for radiotherapy. It is commonly known for its use in irradiating bacteria in spices and other food products. Because of its strong gamma radiation, cobalt-60 can be especially harmful if there is direct exposure to the material. Risk of cancer can also be increased if cobalt-60 is inhaled or ingested in large enough amounts.
