Get Up to Speed with New Tutorials on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and the Non-Proliferation Treaty

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), in partnership with the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), has developed a new set of educational tutorials on today's non-proliferation challenges. The tutorials are designed to build a basic understanding of these issues for anyone new to the field—including students, young professionals and media—or serve as a refresher course for experienced professionals. They can be used on the job, in the classroom, or on the road to get oriented on key concepts and issues related to nonproliferation.

Two tutorials were launched today to coincide with an international non-proliferation meeting at United Nations headquarters in New York:

  • A tutorial on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) explains the significance of the NPT, the cornerstone of the non-proliferation regime, and explores the treaty’s review process and current challenges.
  • A tutorial on the broader Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime details the international framework of agreements and organizations aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and contributing to progress on nuclear disarmament.

These mobile-friendly, online tutorials can be used to understand the work of diplomats and experts at the ongoing Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) meeting for the 2015 NPT Review Conference.

Visit NTI's new tutorials site to watch the introductory video and explore modules with interactive maps and timelines, infographics and a glossary. Users can take quizzes to test their knowledge. Educators can ask students to present a certificate of completion.

These tutorials are the first in a series. New tutorials will cover the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear and radiological security, biological weapons and chemical weapons.

This set of tutorials adds to NTI.org's extensive set of resources on nuclear, chemical and biological threats, developed in partnership with CNS. Tutorial users can dive deeper on NTI's website with country profiles and resources on WMD-related treaties and regimes, nuclear disarmament progress, and submarine proliferation.
