Statement by Sam Nunn on Belarus Announcement to Eliminate Highly Enriched Uranium

Statement from Former Senator Sam Nunn On Belarus Announcement to Eliminate Highly Enriched Uranium

“I want to express my appreciation to the government of Belarus for its significant commitment to eliminate all of its highly enriched uranium by 2012. This action is both bold and sensible and will make the world a safer place. I congratulate President Lukashenka and hope that this commitment will encourage other nations to eliminate their weapon-usable material.

There should be no higher security priority than keeping nuclear weapons materials out of the hands of terrorists. The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) has focused on this issue for many years and recognizes that a single nuclear attack would be catastrophic for the world. We also recognize the great opportunities for and results coming from cooperation on these urgent issues.”
