India Seeks Three Ballistic Missile Subs

India's navy intends to eventually possess three ballistic missile submarines, the Times of India reported on Sunday (see GSN, April 13).

Each of the vessels would carry nuclear-tipped missiles capable of traveling significant distances, according to the newspaper.

Operation of the first domestically produced ballistic missile submarine, the INS Arihant, is scheduled to begin in the initial six months of next year, according to the newspaper. The milestone was previously reported as being planned for 2012 (see GSN, April 4; Rajat Pandit, Times of India, May 20).
