Development Officer
The Nuclear Threat Initiative is seeking a Development Officer to join the Development (DEV) team. This position reports to the Vice President for DEV. This is a full-time hybrid position, working a minimum of three days a week in our Washington, DC office.
NTI is a nonprofit global security organization focused on reducing nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats imperiling humanity.
This selected candidate will work with the Development team and NTI leadership to manage major giving at NTI. In coordination with the Vice President of Development, the Development Officer creates and executes an annual plan to increase major giving through tailored engagement and outreach strategies and helps NTI build and strengthen relationships with major donors and prospects.
This will include:
- Building and overseeing a portfolio of 80-100 prospects with individualized strategies, focused on major giving prospects (with capacity of $100k – $1M).
- Planning and facilitating leadership engagement with major giving prospects.
- Creating and implementing segment-specific strategies for major giving prospects, including volunteer opportunities and communications.
- Documenting and illustrating major gift pipeline progress for NTI leadership using Salesforce
- Overseeing the moves management system for donors and prospects in Salesforce; compiling lists of donors and prospects needing outreach and tracks next steps for all priority individuals.
- Working to build a planned giving program at NTI, including identifying good planned giving prospects, responding to donors seeking information on how to make a planned gift, educating leadership about planned/legacy giving, properly acknowledging planned gifts, and managing the small group of existing legacy donors.
- Performing other duties as necessary.
What are the requirements for the position? Preferred candidates will have:
- Bachelor’s Degree and
- At least 3-5 years of relevant development experience for a non-profit organization.

- You have excellent communication, writing, and editing skills.
- You exhibit high integrity and sound independent judgment.
- You have demonstrated familiarity with individual stewardship and cultivation strategies, major giving cycles, retention strategies, and communication and engagement metrics.
- You have familiarity with or interest in international relations, global security, and/or existential risk reduction (preferred).
- You have previous major gift fundraising experience (preferred).
- You have knowledge of Salesforce or a similar donor database preferred, including proficiency in reporting, dashboards, and basic administrator functions.
This position may require some domestic travel.
Hiring pay range: $85,000 – $102,000 annual, dependent on prior experience. This position is eligible for health insurance benefits.
