Director of Development (Institutional Giving)

NTI – a global security organization driving systemic solutions to nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats imperiling humanity – is seeking a Director of Development to join the Development team.

This position reports to the Vice President for Development.  This is a full-time hybrid position, working a minimum of three days a week in our Washington, DC office.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) seeks a strategic and experienced fundraising professional to manage NTI’s portfolio of institutional prospects and the full lifecycle of grants that support our mission to reduce nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats. This is a high-impact role for a creative, solutions-oriented leader.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing institutional funding strategies aligned with NTI’s priorities and philanthropic trends.
  • Identifying, cultivating, and stewarding relationships with foundation and government funders.
  • Leading the development of high-quality proposals, concept notes, budgets, and reports, translating NTI’s complex programmatic work into compelling funding opportunities.
  • Partnering with program and finance teams to ensure strong alignment, accurate budgeting, compliance, and timely reporting.
  • Managing the institutional giving pipeline in Salesforce, ensuring accurate tracking and analysis of prospects, proposals, and grants.
  • Briefing senior leadership and preparing materials for funder engagement and high-level meetings.
  • Strengthening internal systems and processes to support efficient and effective grants management and funder engagement.
  • Contributing to broader development strategy, team leadership, and cross-functional collaboration.

What are the requirements for the position?  Preferred candidates will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in institutional fundraising, with a strong track record of securing and managing six- and seven-figure grants.
  • Exceptional skills in proposal writing, editing, and grants management.
  • Experience working with CRM systems, preferably Salesforce.
  • Excellent relationship management, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Deep understanding of foundation and government funding landscapes, particularly in global security, public health, or technology.

This position may require limited domestic (and possible international) travel for funder meetings and conferences.

Hiring pay range: $135,000 – $160,000 annually, dependent on prior experience.  This position is eligible for health insurance benefits, as well as other generous benefits that are part of the NTI compensation package.
