Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall Joins NTI’s Board of Directors, Lynn Rusten to Serve as Vice President, Global Nuclear Policy Program
WASHINGTON
— Former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall has
joined the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), an
organization working to prevent catastrophic attacks with weapons of mass destruction
and disruption (WMDD)—nuclear, biological, radiological, chemical, and cyber.
In addition, Lynn Rusten,
former Senior Director for Arms Control and Nonproliferation on the White House
National Security Council staff, has accepted the position of Vice President, Global
Nuclear Policy Program at NTI.
“We are delighted to
welcome Liz to the NTI team,” said NTI CEO and Co-Chair Ernest J. Moniz. “She
brought important strategic thinking and innovative ideas to the Department of
Energy, and I’m confident she’ll do the same at NTI.”

has added invaluable expertise to NTI since she joined us in 2017, and we continue
to be grateful for her superb knowledge, experience and leadership.”
Sherwood-Randall
served as Deputy Secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy from 2014-2017. In
this role, she was the Department’s statutory chief operating officer,
executing leadership and management responsibilities for DOE’s National Nuclear
Security Administration and 17 National Laboratories, including the three
principal nuclear weapons laboratories. She has also served in national security positions
at the White House and the Department of Defense. She is currently a Distinguished
Professor of the Practice at the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Nunn School
of International Affairs, a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Belfer Center of Science and
International Affairs, and an advisor to several national laboratories.
Rusten
served as the senior director for arms control and nonproliferation on the
White House National Security Council staff from 2011-2014 and has held
positions at the Department of State including chief of staff for the Bureau of
International Security and Nonproliferation and senior advisor in the Bureau of
Arms Control, Verification and Compliance (AVC), where she led the interagency
backstopping process supporting the negotiation and ratification of the New
START Treaty. She has served in variety
of positions in the Department of State, the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament
Agency (ACDA), NTI, the Senate Armed Services Committee, the National Academy
of Sciences and the Congressional Research Service.
