NTI Hosts Meeting of Global Enterprise to Strengthen Non-Proliferation and Disarmament

On February 3-4, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) hosted a meeting of the Global Enterprise to Strengthen Non-Proliferation and Disarmament in Paris. The Global Enterprise meeting brought together officials from nearly 20 countries, along with non-government experts, to identify and consider practical steps and initiatives that could produce tangible progress on disarmament and nonproliferation for 2020 Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. The discussion reflected universal support for the fundamental commitments at the heart of the NPT and a shared desire to identify creative, practical areas for progress in support of the Treaty. Participants focused on options in five key areas: improving transparency; reducing the risk of nuclear use; political statements focused on disarmament, risk reduction, and transparency; nuclear doctrine; and managing the risks associated with fissile materials.  NTI plans to re-convene the group for a brief meeting on the margins of the NPT Preparatory Committee meeting this spring and another full session in the fall.
