Catholic Bishops, Universities Pledge to Renew Engagement on Nuclear Disarmament

Launching a multi-year project to engage a new generation of Catholics, Catholic bishops joined scholars and policy specialists at Stanford University April 24-25 for a Colloquium on Revitalizing Catholic Engagement on Nuclear Disarmament. The event, hosted by former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and NTI Emeritus Board Member and former Secretary of Defense William J. Perry at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, focused on the moral imperative behind eliminating nuclear weapons and the church’s historic and influential commitment to ridding the world of nuclear weapons. “This is a security question, it’s a policy questions, it’s a diplomacy question—but above all, it’s a moral question,” NTI Co-Chairman Sam Nunn told the group.

University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins called for a “fresh examination of the ethics of nuclear weapons in today’s world.”
