Nevada Legislature Passes Unanimous Resolution Supporting the U.S. Moratorium on Nuclear Weapons Testing

The Nevada Senate and Assembly passed a unanimous, bipartisan resolution calling on the federal government to maintain its 32-year moratorium on explosive nuclear weapons testing. The resolution, AJR 13, was advocated for by Nevadans Against Nuclear Weapons Testing, a bipartisan coalition organized by NTI. The diverse coalition included bipartisan elected officials, influential business groups like the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Nevada Resort Association, and community voices including  the Nevada Conservation League, impacted servicemembers of The Invisible Enemy, and many more.

AJR 13 was introduced in response to growing calls in Washington to resume nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada National Security Site, located just 65 miles outside of Las Vegas. Resuming nuclear testing would risk the health and safety of Nevadans, U.S. national security, and global stability.

“The Nevada legislature’s unanimous bipartisan passage of this resolution is on the money,” said former U.S. Secretary of Energy and NTI Co-Chair and CEO Ernest J. Moniz. “The U.S. is able to affirm reliability of its deterrent without testing and should not provide a rationale for others to test – weakening our security.  And this resolution demonstrates that a resumption of testing would be deeply unpopular among those closest to the test site.”
