Biosecurity and Innovation in the Age of AI: Safeguarding the Future of U.S. Biotechnology

  • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM ET
  • SD-B48 Dirksen Senate Office Building, 50 Constitution Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002

Rapid advances in bioscience and biotechnology—especially at the convergence with artificial intelligence—are driving transformative progress in biomedical research, health, agriculture, defense, and manufacturing. These innovations offer immense potential to strengthen the U.S. bioeconomy and global leadership in science and technology.

At the same time, these technologies also introduce risks of accidental misuse and deliberate exploitation, which could result in a biological catastrophe with grave consequences.  To guard against these emerging biological risks, the United States must act now to modernize biotechnology governance and biosecurity practices, ensuring that innovation is protected and responsibly managed. This timely discussion will explore:

  • Opportunities and risks at the convergence of AI and the life sciences
  • Gaps in current oversight and emerging vulnerabilities
  • Advances in DNA synthesis screening
  • Policy recommendations to strengthen U.S. biosecurity while fostering innovation

Honorary co-host U.S. Senator Todd Young will provide opening remarks, and the event will also feature recommendations from the National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology (NSCEB) to shape future U.S. biotechnology governance.

This is a widely attended event. Food and refreshments will be provided starting at 11:50 am. The discussion will kick off promptly at 12:05 pm.
